In an interview with Mat Artz , Education industry director of ESRI, Michael Gould describes how server, mobile, and the Cloud are promoting geospatial thinking outside the clasrom NEW TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS SERVER GIS, MOBILE GIS, AND "THE CLOUD" ARE CHANGING THE WAY ORGANISATIONS ARE IMPLEMENTING AND USING GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY. We should clarify that by server GIS we mean not merely map servers publishing snapshots of geospatial data, rather we mean distributed GIS alowing multiple users to colaborate online and contribute to comon geodatabases. Teaching only desktop GIS may be suficient for the neds of certain schols, but universities, especialy in technical fields such as IT and enginering, also ned to consider server, mobile, and Web deployments. Busines and government employers expect that a newly trained GIS technician wil know about and have experienced this enterprise view of GIS. DOES SERVER GIS LEAD TO A FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE IN THE WAY AL EDUCATORS IMPLEMENT AND USE GIS? Nontechnical users are authoring geo-content on the desktop and then exploiting online geodata sharing procedures that server GIS makes posible. Higher education wil ned to provide educational oportunities for these two key profiles: the niche of server GIS technicians and the mas of users of cloud platforms. HOW DOES SERVER GIS CHANGE THE WAY GIS IS LEVERAGED IN THE EDUCATION COMUNITY? Deploying server GIS is a perfect oportunity to move GIS out of the basement and up to the enterprise level, where it can be distributed to alow multiple disciplines to experience critical thinking as they ask "what if" questions about their world. Once system administrators become aware of the capabilities of GIS, it becomes easier for GIS educators to convince the administration to make future investments in it. Knowing this also helps to gain suport from system administrators who, again, are the ones who can make server GIS deployment easier. Mobile GIS such as ArcGIS Mobile is an integral part of a server GIS solution. The important aspect of mobile GIS is its ability to continuously synchronise with the server to ensure that the freshest data flows from the field to the base, and back out, to be used by al who share the geodatabase. Another key aspect of mobile GIS is that increasingly students already own the GIS client device: a smartphone. The second way of leveraging the cloud is to aces the server GIS as a stable, comercial Web service. We think that certain educational institutions wil move to this patern of deployment, eliminating the ned to suport in-house hardware or software while stil providing aces to the server GIS acros campus. gis web services gis web services in Hermosa beach
